Attention Sailing Community:

Larchmont Yacht Club and Shields Fleet One are honored to host the 50th Shields National Championship in September, 2014. To help celebrate this historic event, we are announcing a one-day Legends Regatta on the opening day of the event, Wednesday, September 10, and are seeking out motivated participants.

The goals of the Legends Regatta are to:

  1. Reconnect sailors to Shields racing and friends (old and new);
  2. Honor those sailors no longer active in the Class yet central to its success over the past 50 years;
  3. Celebrate the history of 50 years of Shields National Championships.

The schedule will consist of a welcome cocktail party the evening of September 9, followed by a day of racing in boats entered in this year's National Championship Regatta (September 11-13), and an awards ceremony during the opening night dinner. Entrants are also encouraged to participate in all of the social events during the National Championship.

WHO QUALIFIES AS A SHIELDS LEGEND?

For the purpose of this event, a “Legend” is a former Shields competitor with a distinctive connection to the Class. Past National Champions qualify automatically, though in keeping with the spirit of the event, any entrant in this year's National Championship Regatta will be ineligible to participate as a skipper or helmsman in the Legends Regatta.

Legends may enter individually or with their crews, though the organizing authority retains the right to place at least one owner's rep aboard each borrowed boat. Individual entrants may be teamed with other Legends. The organizing authority will attempt, where possible, to reconnect Legends with their former boat.

The Shields Class was conceived to offer competitive sailing and camaraderie for sailors of all ages, and has continued to fulfill these goals for the past 50 years. If you are, or know of an individual(s) who has helped your local Shields fleet flourish, please click on the link below and submit an entry form today.
